The Lower Falls of the Yellowstone River drops roughly 308 feet into the canyon, making it the tallest major waterfall in the park and one of its most photographed sights. Views like this one, taken from the canyon trail, show how the water plunges over the rim into a gorge whose walls are streaked in yellow, orange and rust. Yellowstone was set aside as the first national park in 1872, and early visitors who reached these overlooks were among the first to bring the canyon's scenery to a wide public. The stone colors come from iron and other minerals altered by hot water and steam long ago, a process still visible across the area.
