The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone River, shown here in an 1871 albumen print, comes from the work of the Geological and Geographical Survey of the Territories, the federal expedition led by Ferdinand V. Hayden. Survey photographers carried heavy glass-plate cameras into the Rocky Mountain West, and their images of canyons, waterfalls, and hot springs were circulated widely in Washington. Those pictures helped persuade Congress to set aside Yellowstone as the first national park in 1872. The albumen process, which uses egg-white-bound silver on paper, gives the print its warm tones and fine detail in the canyon walls.
