Survey cameras reached the Yellowstone canyon in the early 1870s, and this 1871 view shows the river cutting deep through the valley's eroded walls. It was made during the U.S. Geological and Geographical Survey of the Territories, led by Ferdinand V. Hayden, which was mapping the region and recording its geology and scenery. The survey's photographs, carried out on fragile glass plates through rough backcountry, helped persuade Congress to set the area aside as Yellowstone National Park in 1872. The steep, colored rock walls and the narrow river far below are the features worth noticing here.
