The Lower Falls of the Yellowstone River, which drop roughly 308 feet over a basalt canyon, were among the first natural wonders photographed in the park's early years. This albumen print, dating to about 1892, comes from the studio of William Henry Jackson, whose photographs of the region helped persuade Congress to protect the area as the nation's first national park in 1872. Jackson's company also supplied views to the Detroit Publishing Company, which later issued them widely as tinted and untinted prints. The image shows how visitors of the period encountered the park, with the falls framed by the steep walls of the canyon.
