Mary's Bay, an inlet on Yellowstone Lake, is the subject of this stereograph card, number 455 in a series titled *Scenery of the Yellowstone*, issued in 1871. Marshall published the card as a pair of side-by-side albumen prints meant to be viewed through a stereoscope, which fused them into a single image with depth. The series appeared the same year as the Hayden Geological Survey's expedition to the region, and the photographs from that trip, including those by William Henry Jackson, helped persuade Congress to set Yellowstone aside as the first national park in 1872.
