Lake Mary's Bay, on the shore of Yellowstone Lake, is the subject of this stereograph, numbered 455 in a series titled *Scenery of the Yellowstone, 1871*. The 1871 season was the year of the Hayden Geological Survey's expedition into the region, whose photographer, William Henry Jackson, and painter, Thomas Moran, helped introduce Yellowstone's scenery to a national audience. Cards like this one were meant to be viewed through a stereoscope, which fused two slightly offset images into a single sense of depth, so the lake and its shoreline would have appeared almost three-dimensional to a home viewer.
