Shoshone Lake is the largest backcountry lake in Yellowstone, a broad expanse of water in the park's southwestern corner that is reached mainly by trail or boat rather than by road. Its name comes from the Shoshone people of the region. Views like this one, with smaller inset scenes around the central lake, were popular in the late 1800s, when Yellowstone was still new to most Americans and images of its lakes, geysers, and canyons helped introduce the park to a national audience. The inset views are worth studying, since they show how publishers arranged several scenes on one sheet to suggest the variety of the park.
