Coaches waiting at the front of the Yellowstone Lake Hotel show the tour system that carried visitors through the park before private automobiles were allowed. The hotel, on the northern shore of Yellowstone Lake, opened in 1891 and was one of several lodgings run by concessionaires who met travelers at the railheads and moved them by horse-drawn coach from one stop to the next. The Detroit Publishing Company, which produced many views of American scenery and tourist sites around 1905, sold images like this to visitors and to people who had never seen the park. The scene captures the leisurely, carefully planned travel that defined early national park tourism.
