Yellowstone Lake, set in the park's southern highlands, is the focus here, with a rainbow over the water and rocky shoreline in the foreground. The print comes from Prang's American Chromos, a series of color lithographs that Louis Prang's Boston firm issued in the 1870s to bring western scenery into American homes. The initials "TM" in the title point to Thomas Moran, the painter whose 1871 sketches from the Hayden Survey were translated into color prints like this one. Each chromolithograph was built from several stone plates, each inked in a different color, so the finished sheet approximates a painting.
