Yellowstone Lake, a high mountain lake in the park's southern reaches, is the subject here, with a rainbow arching over the water and rocks along the shore. L. Prang & Co., the Boston firm known for chromolithographs, issued the print around 1875 as part of its American Chromos series. Each color in these multistone prints required its own lithographic stone, so the work was labor-intensive. Yellowstone had been set aside as the first national park only a few years earlier, in 1872, and images like this carried its scenery to viewers who would never make the trip.
