Few places in Yellowstone show the park's geothermal side as plainly as the Fountain Hotel area, where visitors could walk among boiling springs and mud pots while the lake lay just beyond. The title pairs the lake with the Paint-Pots and Minerva Terrace, three features that drew early tourists to the Firehole and Gibbon country near the park's northwest edge. Yellowstone was set aside as the first national park in 1872, and hotels like the Fountain were built to bring visitors close to such sights. Stereoscopic views of this kind, sold in sets, helped shape how Americans pictured the park long before they reached it.
