Two views of a rustic hotel on the shore of Yellowstone Lake make this print stand apart from the park's many scenic studies, since it turns the camera toward the lodgings that welcomed visitors. The building most likely shown is the Lake Hotel, a log-and-timber resort on the lake's north shore that was built in the late 1880s to suit the park's wilderness setting. Crandall & Maher's 1904 copyright places the pair of images in the early years of automobile-free tourism, when rail travelers reached Yellowstone by stagecoach and stayed in lodges like this one. The rough-hewn style was a deliberate choice, meant to blend the hotel into the forest rather than compete with it.
