Turned toward the right in a head-and-shoulders view, this portrait shows Ferdinand Vandeveer Hayden, the geologist who led federal surveys of the western territories in the 1870s. His 1871 expedition to the Yellowstone region, with photographs by William Henry Jackson and paintings by Thomas Moran, helped persuade Congress to create the country's first national park in 1872. The record describes this as a reproduction, so the 1940s date is approximate and the image is a later copy of an earlier likeness.
