Here Thomas Moran appears in a half-length pose, turned to the left and dressed in hat and coat, in a photogravure made from a portrait by the New York photographer Napoleon Sarony. Moran is best known for his large Yellowstone landscapes, including work from the 1871 Hayden Survey expedition, and his paintings were widely credited with helping persuade Congress to set aside Yellowstone as the first national park in 1872. Photogravure, a photomechanical process prized in the 1890s for its fine tonal detail, was often used to reproduce such studio portraits in magazines and books.
