Few stage comedies of the Depression years were as openly playful about crime as Barré Lyndon's *The Amazing Dr. Clitterhouse*, which follows a London physician who joins a gang of thieves to study them. This 1938 silkscreen poster was made under the Federal theater Project, the New Deal program that employed out-of-work actors, designers and stagehands, and it advertises a Los Angeles production. Like much of the project's printed work, it uses bold flat color and plain, direct lettering, a style that was inexpensive to produce and easy to read from the street.
