Herbert Ashton Jr.'s 1938 poster advertises a production titled *Brothers*, sponsored by the Federal theater Project, the arm of the Works Progress Administration that employed theater workers during the Depression. The record places the production in California, where the project's units staged plays in the late 1930s. The poster is a silkscreen print, a method the WPA used because it was inexpensive and could produce bold, flat areas of color for public walls. Its design reflects the project's aim of reaching audiences who could not otherwise afford live theater.
