Few details set this poster apart as clearly as its venue: a Presbyterian church in Cincinnati, Ohio, where a federal light opera group staged Gilbert and Sullivan's *H.M.S. Pinafore* in 1939. The operetta, first performed in London in 1878, was a favorite of community and amateur companies, and the Works Progress Administration's arts programs of the late 1930s brought stage productions like this one to local audiences during the Depression. The poster's silkscreen color design comes from the WPA's poster program, and a date stamp of May 18, 1939 on the reverse helps pin down when it was printed.
