Among the Federal theater posters, this one is tied to Iowa by its subject headings, and its title, "Class of '29," points to a college graduating class of 1929, the year the stock market crashed. The Federal theater Project, begun in 1935 under the Works Progress Administration, gave theater professionals work during the Depression and staged plays at prices most audiences could afford. Its posters were silkscreened by WPA artists. This example is dated 1936 and carries a July 1937 date stamp on the back, a reminder that such advertisements stayed in circulation well after a production had opened.
