Few theater posters from the Federal theater Project are as sly as this one for *The Amazing Dr. Clitterhouse*, a comedy-thriller by the English writer Barré Lyndon about a respectable criminologist who joins a gang to study its habits. The 1938 silkscreen advertised a Los Angeles staging, one of many productions the Federal theater Project mounted in cities across the country during the New Deal. The project put unemployed actors, writers and designers to work, and its posters were made by WPA artists using flat, bold color and stencil-cut shapes. That approach gave Depression-era audiences a cheap, eye-catching way to find out what was playing.
