This silkscreen poster advertises a Federal theater Project staging of *The Amazing Dr. Clitterhouse*, Barré Lyndon's 1936 comedy-thriller about a physician who joins a criminal gang to study its members. The production was one of the many the federal program mounted in California during the late 1930s, when it brought live theater to working audiences across the country. The poster was made under the Work Projects Administration, whose artists used inexpensive silkscreen printing to produce bold, flat-colored designs in quantity. Lyndon, a British-born playwright and screenwriter, is credited as the artist here, which reflects the program's practice of having theater-trained designers create its publicity.
