The poster advertises a Los Angeles staging of Barré Lyndon's crime play *The Amazing Dr. Clitterhouse*, about a criminologist who joins a gang to study its members. The play had already been a Broadway hit before Hollywood adapted it in 1938 with Edward G. Robinson. This poster comes from the Federal theater Project, part of the Works Progress Administration, which employed out-of-work actors, designers and stagehands during the Depression. Its silkscreen printing in bold flat color shows how the project borrowed commercial-style graphics to draw working audiences to live theater.
