A respected London psychiatrist who joins a gang of thieves to study criminals gives Barré Lyndon's play its premise, and this 1936 poster carries that wry crime-story spirit into its bold silkscreen design. Lyndon, an English-born writer, saw the play become a 1938 Warner Bros. film starring Edward G. Robinson. The poster belongs to the Federal theater Project, a Works Progress Administration program that staged plays across the country during the Depression, including in California, where its productions reached audiences in cities such as Los Angeles and San Francisco.
