Few cemeteries in the South carry the sense of a city laid out for the dead quite like Metairie Cemetery, and this glass negative records its entrance as it stood in the first decade of the 1900s. Metairie opened in 1872 on land that had once been a racetrack, and its gatehouse and gates set the tone for the above-ground tombs, mausoleums, and tree-lined avenues that visitors would find within. The picture comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers traveled widely to document American places for commercial sale around the turn of the century. Its 8 by 10 inch format gives unusually fine detail in the gatehouse stonework and the approach.
