The particular interest of this view is the Grand Army of the Republic Memorial at Chalmette National Cemetery, which stands on the grounds of the 1815 Battle of New Orleans, where Andrew Jackson's forces turned back a British invasion in January 1815. The cemetery was established during the Civil War as a burial place for Union dead, and the Grand Army of the Republic, the Union veterans' organization, later added a memorial there. Taken around 1910 by the Detroit Publishing Company, the large glass negative records a site where two chapters of American military history meet, one from the early republic and one from the Civil War era.
