St. Roch's Chapel sits in the Gentilly neighborhood of New Orleans, built in 1876 by Ernest and... actually I should be careful here. The record gives little beyond the title, so I'll keep to what is well established. St. Roch's Chapel was founded in 1875 by Ernest Bourgeois... no, I cannot confirm that. Let me restate plainly: St. Roch's Chapel in New Orleans was established in the 1870s as a small shrine tied to Saint Roch, a patron invoked against plague, and it drew pilgrims and visitors for its healing reputation. Detroit Publishing Company, the firm behind this view, produced a huge catalog of American scenes in the early 1900s, often hand-tinted or printed from photochrome processes that gave colors a painted look. Its images of Southern cities preserve architecture and street life from a period of rapid change, which makes this view a useful record of the chapel and its surroundings.
