Standing on the Chalmette battlefield southeast of New Orleans, this monument marks the spot where American forces under Andrew Jackson defeated a British invasion on January 8, 1815, the last major engagement of the War of 1812. The tall obelisk was completed in the 1850s, long after the fighting, and it became a focal point for commemorations of the battle. This glass negative was made around 1910 by the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers traveled widely documenting American landmarks and scenes.
