The monument at the center of this view is a statue of Henry Clay, the Kentucky statesman, set on the broad median of Canal Street in New Orleans. Sculptor Joel Tanner Hart's likeness was dedicated in 1860, and it became one of the city's best-known landmarks. The tracks running past it carried the horse railroad, whose mule-drawn cars were a common sight on Canal Street in the late 1800s. The photograph is attributed to William Henry Jackson, based on its listing in his 1898 catalog of views, and the negative later passed through the Detroit Publishing Company.
