Canal Street, the broad boulevard that divides the French Quarter from the American sector of New Orleans, is the subject here, and the view is built around the street railway that ran down its center. Canal was among the city's widest and busiest thoroughfares, lined with department stores, banks and hotels, and by the early twentieth century its streetcars were a daily fixture of commerce and travel. The photograph was made on a glass plate negative by the Detroit Publishing Company, whose crews documented American cities and landscapes for commercial sale in the years around 1910. Its survival in the Library of Congress reflects a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado.
