Royal Street running off Canal Street is the subject here, a view of one of the French Quarter's best-known thoroughfares captured on a large glass negative around 1906. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made thousands of such views of American cities, towns and scenery for postcards and travel books, produced this print from the negative, and the company's commercial photography offers a snapshot of early twentieth-century urban life. Look along the street for the storefronts, signage and street traffic that marked the commercial edge of the Quarter, where Canal Street's department stores and shops gave way to older residential blocks.
