Canal Street, the broad avenue that marks the boundary between the French Quarter and the newer American sector, was a main route for New Orleans Mardi Gras parades, and this stereograph shows one of them in the 1920s. Keystone View Company, a Meadville, Pennsylvania firm that sold mass-produced stereo cards nationwide, issued it as a pair of images meant to be viewed through a lens for a three-dimensional effect. The March 11 date is an old caption entry that the record marks as unverified, so it may not match the parade's actual day, which fell during the Carnival season before Lent. The floats, costumed revelers, and crowds offer a window onto how the city's celebration looked to armchair travelers of the time.
