On Mardi Gras day, Rex, the King of Carnival, is received at New Orleans City Hall, where the mayor traditionally hands over the symbolic key to the city. Rex, a krewe founded in 1872, organized the city's main daytime parade and pageantry, and by the early 1900s this ceremony drew large crowds to the streets around the building. The Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial firm known for its views of American towns and landscapes, made this glass dry plate negative around 1906, recording a civic event that still anchors the city's Carnival season.
