This glass negative records a Mardi Gras Day procession that the title identifies as the "Red" pageant, one of the many parades that moved through New Orleans on Fat Tuesday, the last day before Lent. By the 1890s, krewes were staging elaborate floats and costumed riders, and crowds packed the streets to watch them pass. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made this 8 by 10 inch negative, sent photographers across the country to document scenic places and public events. Its views of such celebrations are now a valuable record of how the city's carnival looked before the mid-twentieth century.
