Rex, the king of New Orleans' Mardi Gras, leads the procession this view captures as it moves up Camp Street on carnival day. The Rex organization had staged its daytime parade since 1872, and its floats and costumed riders drew crowds along the route, while carriages and coaches of the period share the street with the marchers. Made between 1900 and 1906 by the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers traveled widely to document American towns and cities, this glass transparency preserves how the city's most famous street celebration looked in the early twentieth century.
