Looking straight down Canal Street, the wide commercial avenue that ran from the Mississippi River into the city, this c1902 view shows a crowd filling the roadway. The street divided the old French Quarter from the newer American sector, and by the early 1900s it was lined with department stores, hotels and theaters. Electric streetcars shared the street with pedestrians and horse-drawn wagons, making the scene a useful window onto daily city life. The record rests on an old caption card and has not been fully verified.
