Under the heading "the business boom in the South," this wood engraving shows a working scene on the levee at New Orleans, the riverfront where cargo moving along the Mississippi was loaded and unloaded. Joseph Horton made the sketch, and an engraver turned it into a print for *Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper*, which ran it in the January 8, 1881, issue. The picture reflects the optimism of the early 1880s, when New Orleans was working to rebuild its trade after the Civil War and Reconstruction. Illustrated weeklies like this one brought scenes of commerce and city life to readers who could not see them firsthand.
