Few places in the United States were as tied to river commerce as the levee at New Orleans, where the Mississippi was lined with wharves, warehouses, and cargo for ships bound for distant ports. This stereograph, dated around 1900, is one of the American Stereoscopic Company's copyrighted views, made for viewers who sat with a stereoscope and saw the scene in three dimensions. Its caption card lists African Americans at work, a reminder that the city's port depended heavily on Black dockworkers and laborers whose labor was often overlooked in the postcard-style views of the period. The record notes that its caption information is unverified, so the particular men and tasks shown are best observed in the image itself.
