This chromolithograph centers on the levee itself, the long embankment where goods moved between riverboats and the city along the Mississippi at New Orleans. The print was published in New York by Currier & Ives around 1884, and it bears the signature of the artist William A. Walker. The firm produced colorful views of American cities and rivers for a wide middle-class market, so the image reflects how the public pictured the city in the 1880s. In that period the New Orleans waterfront was one of the country's busiest cotton and steamboat landings, which makes the scene a useful record of river commerce.
