Cotton bales are being loaded onto the stern-wheel steamer *Warren* at the New Orleans levee, where the riverfront was the city's main point of exchange for the crop. In the 1880s and 1890s, cotton from the Mississippi Valley and beyond was hauled to the docks and shipped by river boat or steamship, and dockworkers, many of them African American, did much of the heavy lifting. The photograph is attributed to William Henry Jackson, a well-known western photographer, and its later print run through the Detroit Publishing Company helped spread views of American river commerce to a wide public.
