Dock hands sit atop covered goods on the New Orleans levee, with the side-wheel steamer Belle of the Coast nearby. In the late 1800s the riverfront was one of the busiest cotton-shipping points in the country, and the levee was where cargo moved from warehouses onto steamboats bound for markets along the Mississippi and beyond. The view is attributed to photographer William Henry Jackson, known for his western scenes, and the negative later passed to the Detroit Publishing Company, which issued many prints of American places around 1900. The picture shows the slow, physical labor that kept the port running.
