Cotton bales stacked high along the riverfront levee at New Orleans set this view apart from the many Mississippi waterfront pictures in the collection. Photographer William Henry Jackson, best known for his Western landscapes, made the negative in the late 1880s or 1890s, and it was later issued by the Detroit Publishing Company, which sold views like this one to travelers and schools. Cotton was the city's great export, and the levee was where it waited for steamboats and ocean vessels to carry it away. The glass plate's survival through the company's catalog is a reminder of how much commercial trade passed along that waterfront.
