Canal Street, one of the widest thoroughfares in the American South, separates the old French Quarter from the newer business district, and this panorama shows it in the years before the automobile took over. The wide view is built from two glass negatives that were made to be read side by side, and it shows the street railroad tracks and the storefronts along the busy commercial blocks. The Detroit Publishing Company, which sent photographers across the country around 1900, issued city views like this one for tourists and promoters. Today such panoramas are useful records of how American streetscapes looked in the early twentieth century.
