The Audubon Building, photographed around 1910, is a commercial structure in New Orleans, a port city whose businesses drew heavily on Gulf shipping, cotton, and sugar trade. The image survives as an 8 x 10 inch glass plate negative made by the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for documenting American cities and landscapes in the early twentieth century. The negative was later given to the Library of Congress by the State Historical Society of Colorado in 1949. Its large format captures architectural detail and street-level commercial life that smaller prints often lose.
