Few of the Detroit Publishing Company's views of New Orleans are as quiet as this one, which turns its attention from the city's streets to a still waterway lined with live oaks in Audubon Park. The park, laid out on the former Tulane plantation grounds along the Mississippi and opened for the 1884 World's Industrial and Cotton Centennial Exposition, was a favorite place for residents and visitors to stroll and take in the Southern landscape. Spanish moss hangs from the heavy branches, a feature of Louisiana oaks that photographers of the period often sought out as a symbol of the South. The glass negative, made around 1910, comes from a company that produced large numbers of views for travel markets.
