Palms standing beside a live oak set this view of City Park apart from many scenes of southern greenery, pairing a tropical-looking tree with one of the region's native giants. City Park, on the edge of New Orleans, was established in the 1850s on land that had once been part of a plantation, and by the early 1900s its shaded lanes and lagoons drew steady crowds of visitors. The picture is an 8 by 10 inch glass negative, dated around 1910, made by the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that produced large numbers of views of American towns and scenery for postcards and travel publications. The large format gives the foliage and trunks a fine level of detail.
