Horticultural Hall stood in Audubon Park, the uptown New Orleans green space that the city developed in the 1880s. The building was put up for the 1884 to 1885 World's Industrial and Cotton Centennial Exposition, which was held on the park grounds and drew visitors from across the country. Glass-walled halls like this one gave the city a place to show plants and flowers all year, which suited its warm, humid climate. The negative was made by the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for large-format views of American towns, parks and scenery in the early 1900s, so the picture shows how the building looked to visitors in that decade.
