Long rows of live oaks arch over a road in this view of Audubon Park, their broad limbs meeting overhead to form a shaded tunnel. The park sits along the Mississippi River in uptown New Orleans, on land that had been a plantation, and it hosted the World's Industrial and Cotton Centennial Exposition in 1884 and 1885. The Detroit Publishing Company, known for its views of American cities, scenery and tourist destinations, made this 8 by 10 inch glass plate negative around 1910. Avenues like this one were a favorite subject for photographers promoting the South's landscapes.
