Saint Charles Avenue, pictured here with palms lining a residential stretch, was one of New Orleans's most fashionable boulevards around 1910. The avenue runs uptown from the central business district through the Garden District, where a wide grassy median and large houses set off the streetcar line that still runs down its center. The Detroit Publishing Company made this view as an 8 by 10 inch glass negative, a format that recorded fine detail in the foliage and pavement. The firm photographed American towns and scenic places for travel promotion and sold its views widely.
