Esplanade Avenue is one of New Orleans' best-known boulevards, lined with a wide grassy median and old live oaks that shade the houses on either side. This view was made on a large 8 by 10 inch glass dry plate, a format that gave the Detroit Publishing Company sharp detail for its commercial travel views. The company photographed American towns and scenery around 1900 to 1920, and its negatives were later donated to the Library of Congress. The catalog also tags the scene with monuments and memorials, so a commemorative structure may appear along the avenue.
