Two glass negatives record this view of Jackson Square as a single wide panorama, with the plaza's iron fence and walks laid out before St. Louis Cathedral. The square was called the Place d'Armes until 1851, when it was renamed for Andrew Jackson, the hero of the Battle of New Orleans. Flanking it are the Pontalba Buildings, row apartments completed in the late 1840s and often cited as among the oldest apartment buildings in the United States. The Detroit Publishing Company, which issued views like this for tourists and publishers, made the prints in the early 1900s.
