Andrew Jackson appears here as the commander who held New Orleans in 1815, in a color lithograph built around the battle that made him a national figure. The British assault on the American lines south of the city, fought on January 8, 1815, ended in a decisive American victory, and that win turned Jackson into a hero whose fame helped carry him to the presidency in 1828. The print dates from about 1856, when colored portrait lithographs of popular figures were common in New York. C. Severin composed the design and drew it on stone, and the firm of Boell & Michelin printed it, which places it within the city's mid-century lithography trade.
